The steps in the selection process are as follows:
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
- Medical Examination
- Physical Standard Test (PST)
- Written Test
- Skill Test (Post Wise)

- Forester Grade-I : Graduation in any discipline
- Sub Officer & Constable (WO/WT): 12th Pass with PCM
- Fireman & Emergency Rescuer : 12th Passed with Science.
- AFPF Constable : HSLC (10th) Pass
- Constable (Grade-III) : 10th Passed+ Home Guard Certificate or Minimum NCC ‘A’ Certificate.
- Bandman (Constable) : 10th Pass+Home Guard Certificate or Minimum NCC ‘A’ Certificate+ Proficiency in specific instrument (playing Bagpipes, Snare Drums, Tenor Drums and Bass Drum etc.)
- Bugler : 10th Pass+ Home Guard Certificate or Minimum NCC ‘A’ Certificate+ Proficiency in playing Bugle
- Boatman : 10th Pass+ Proficiency in swimming.
